Wikipedia is blacked out for 24 hours today

I support their move. It’s hard on us though. Just bit me. I knew about it ahead too. But it’s a truth universally acknowledged, show people how bad something could be, and they will finally believe it.

I do applaud their blackout on January 18, 2012.

Every Category in this blog system is applied to this post, therefore, and every TAG … it’s just not reasonable to list every tag, so I’ve used ‘Everything’ and ‘Nothing’ as my TAGS.

Why?

It’s that time again, Fall Allergies are totally whopping me. It was a couple of weeks or three ago that I and my eldest noticed effects ramping up, so we started taking the one-a-day Aller-tec (from Costco) which we had used previously in the Spring (2011.)

Not long after the first ingested pill it is easier to deal with it all. Just kind of feel “normal” as however that is for an individual person. The last few days though have been kind of rough, more than rough, then throw in that my eldest forgot to take his Aller-tec one day and then yesterday I forgot and it was like this for me: I was fine all day until sometime in the afternoon I got a drippy nose and my eyes burned and were so watery and I wanted to curl up and …

I had to take my contacts out. It was so bad. I took the Aller-tec late afternoon when I knew I just couldn’t get through the rest of the day and night before getting another (at the right time.) Seemed like a good plan. Now I’m wishing for the time today to take another. It’s 5am-ish, so it’s been like 12-hours since the last.

I wasn’t bothered by it last night, once I got to sleep I stayed asleep, but I got awoken before 5am with husband activity to leave on a trip, and couldn’t go back to sleep and was brushing the watery eye stuff away, and realized I just couldn’t stay in bed, it was too sticky icky.

Weird thing about Fall Allergies, I wasn’t a Fall Allergy person, per se. Allergies of some kind bother me most of the time, but the HEADY version in Spring … it’s a doozy. I noted other people with FALL allergies just plain inundated with goop, drip sneeze. It was a quizzical thing, why them, not me? Who knows. But then it was my turn a few years ago, after all. So why is it also bothering my eldest? I’ve had a lifetime of environment differences and changes in what/when … he’s just been a baby in one of those places and moved to where we are now at 7 months. He’s sensitive, like me, but he’s just 15. So why do we both have FALL allergies the last few years, when I never had them before (and neither did he)? Seems a fair enough question.

Heat Wave

Right now our outdoor temperature probe says: 98.4°  F. + 50% humidity … this morning it wasn’t nearly that hot, don’t know what the humidity was, but it was “sub-tropical MUCK”! I used to live in South Florida, and it was that bad, horrid. I couldn’t hardly breathe, it felt. It felt like thick soup heating up on the stove, not yet boiling, but almost, just nearly steaming.

UGH!

Thanks be to God that we were able to get our A/C replaced in June 2011. It was miserable enough for over a month before that, but nothing like it has been since then, as summer has come in more full, plus some days really hot, but THIS amount of heat and humidity together is totally insane and I’d be dead, no doubt, without our decent A/C in the house. It might not work how I want overall, it doesn’t, but it’s at least life … for me heat is an enemy of massive enmity. My point of tolerance is very, very low, has been for years. It wasn’t when I was young, but we moved to Florida when I was 13, and thing that happened with outdoor PE in the next year coupled with whatever changes were occuring normally in teenage me … it was the death of excercise of any sort without ice cold air around me, or else I’d get fairly miserable or worse, depending on severity of conditions, I’d be retching and wishing I’d die, when everyone else was laughing and just fine and dandy.

Back then nobody, but me, cared about it. It was detrimental for me to be in PE in Florida, unless it was gymnasium stuff. Anyhow, it’s just something that has haunted me for so long now. I continue to do just not do so well if I’m just walking in my house and the temperature is at 70° F. or higher. I lose energy, feel icky, I can feel my thermostat rising. I have to get into cooler air, or lie down, or sit down, or something. I can push through for a little bit, but if the temperature is higher than 72° F. that time is limited. I actually put ice in a freezer bag and put that straight on the back of my neck for relief, which is more than comfort, it’s keeping me from totally getting sick, and that could get to the point of, you-know-what. Not something to mess around with.

So, we had our new A/C installed, the install guys said, “What do you want the thermostats set at? 78°?”

Ha! Ha! HA! No way!

68° is my preference. We all live with it. It’s easier to get warm if it’s too cold for you. It’s nigh impossible for the reverse. I know. Trust me. I do.

July 4th 2011

The Fourth of July was a good day, though the weather was very uncooperative most of the day, in one form or another. It was sunny in the morning, then started to cloud over, and we had threatening storms, then massive rain, lightning, gusty wind, hail, etc.

Fourth of July Thunderstorm

There were MORE storms threatening to our West late afternoon, more beyond that first threat one, which was supposed to be really bad in the first place. All in all, it aimed right at our county, then just stalled, scrunched up, everything just stayed, and never entered our area.

So no more rain. Just clouds, high clouds. Fireworks Friendly.

    Battle of Yorktown Assortment

  • We had a bunch of junk from an assortment Phantom Fireworks gave us. That’s something I want to avoid next time, or else just mess with that stuff mostly another time, really it was a waste of time, things that do this or that but nothing much, no whistle or bang of the flying things. Yuck.
Magic Crystals - 16 wonderful flying regulars

  • We buy Magic Crystals every year now (for a few years running, I guess) — they are awesome! Screaming, spinning, flying, sparkly things.
  • We like shooting Mortars too. We are totally sick of crappy shells though. The “Cherry Bomb Artillery Shells” kit (12-shots) we got at Phantom had the effect pictures on the side of the box. Yeah, right, not how most of them shot off. All big but nothing special.
    Bigger Mortar Kits

  • The “Red White Blue Aerial Show” was a great mortar kit (12-shots). It had no pictures on the box, but was promised to be Red, White & Blue. It was good, some were OK, most were better than that.

We got some other stuff earlier than our “big purchase” and one thing we’d gotten then was WolfPack mortar kit. A smaller mortar kit, we’ve done it before. I wanted to get another, (Black Cat) that was there in the same price range, but the guy in the store belittled it … “same effect in different colors” when the WolfPack gave you multiple effects.

I wasn’t ready to quibble, so just left the subject alone and we got the WolfPack. I knew inherently I was wrong, and will not go there again. Next time I will trust myself and just get the Black Cat shells.

Black Cat Firecrackers - THE BEST!

  • Speaking of Black Cat, they make my favorite firecrackers. I got 2 bricks.
    Right Side of Fireworks

  • We had also gotten War Birds with a coupon & gas receipt that day. Free. It was one of the best new ones we’ve seen. 7-shots, really good shots.
    500 Gram Cakes

  • We had two 500gm cakes that we’d never done before: God of Fire, and Fortress of Fire.

God of Fire was really, really good. Fortress of Fire was good. God of Fire wins me over though as a “I’d surely do that one again” item.

  • We had a new thing (for us) in that we got two 3″ Racks of 500gm 9-shot finales. Gold Brocade, and Red, White and Blue.
    Finale Racks

The way I had them going on the 4th, it didn’t work out, so I didn’t really see either of them. (Really sucks, big time!)

  • We used Phantom Crackling Missile Bases with the finale (love those!)
  • We also used Saturn Battery 100-shot, and Sea Sparrow Missiles with the 500gm Cakes.
Red, White and BOOM! 2 of them, first time

  • A new little box we got was Red, White and BOOM! – 2 of them. Quite nice little guys. I’ll get them every year now (have wanted to get them before, but hubby never let me.)
  • We had a Broken Hearts box, that was nice, as usual. It’s usually add to our order as a bonus every year.
    Mortars, Shells, Tubes

  • We also had prepacked tubes of Red White Blue with whistle tail, and Comet Cluster Shell (that one is my favorite!)

Anyhow, I made a plan of when we’d do what, and overall that worked well. I need to fine-tune what we do next time, and also get more support for wiring things together.

I’m pulling for more stuff for my birthday. I’d love to have something for every one’s birthday, and holidays like New Years, maybe Christmas too, Memorial Day.

I love silver glittery lovely fireworks for New Years. One year, some time ago, we had a pack of fountains from Costco, they are large fountains and filled the night with lovely sparkly stuff, but we’ve not seen that pack ever since. We do go to another place to get stuff now. It’s not something we look for in Costco anymore. I don’t look for packs of fountains either now. A few good ones are worth it, but the best is shot high to fill the sky with light and color and glitz and whhomp, bang, boom!

Spring in the South

It’s springtime here in full force. It’s over 74 degrees F. today. Ugh. The A/C isn’t working. Par for the course. (It hardly ever works the last 7 years, sometimes it does, but after sitting for the winter & being used as a heat pump, it just doesn’t start the real A/C thing until it feels like it, posts here and on my other blog have highlighted those troubles at times.)

Trying to get some things accomplished to make the house better to live in still. Flooring is one thing, partially finished in the living room (most of the room) just need to bring it all the way to the kitchen and the wall and the steps, the harder part. So we are getting it going again by moving some stuff and hopefully we’ll get to the actual bang bang of the hammer into flooring nails sooner than later.

I want to just have a nice cool place to be right now. Every day really, but right now, right now. It’s not to be found. :(

Spring is really coming

Spring really seems to be here where we live. Allergies are up, of course. Just a bit worse than winter allergies now, we do expect them to ramp up more and more over the next month. At any rate, though there are pollens about, I have opened some windows here and there in the house. The fresh air is lovely, it’s not too cold. I’ve turned the heat pump off as well (didn’t want it to run at all, which it only would do at night, depending on what temperature it was set at, but don’t need that when it’s sunny and spring-like all day where our house is.

Our Weeping Willow is putting out it’s greenery. It’s obvious looking out the window to the 80 or so feet to where the tree is, green bumps up and down the long strands that make up a Weeping Willows branches, etc.

Looking at it up close, the Weeping Willow had green coming out a good 1/2″ everywhere. It’s just February 19 today, the 15 day outlook isn’t set in stone, but there COULD be some nights with lows around or below freezing, which depends on many things as to if it’ll be troublesome for plants.

Other things which are growing, our ornamental cherry tree seems to be readying the blossoms that will come within a month or so. Some other things we have, self-planted oak trees in our front area need to be moved, but are already putting out some leaves. A maple tree we have is putting out new growth too, but not leaves. All the maple trees are thickening their buds that will be their “flowers”.

Birds are going crazy eating all the berries created from last years blossoms on the ornamental cherry tree. They’ve pretty much clean off the top half, and are now working on the bottom half. (It hardly had any activity during the whole winter until this week.)

I am worried about the coming heat though. Our A/C has been more and more unreliable over the last 10 years, needs replaced but more than that, overhaul of what we need is necessary. I hold out no hope that the compressor will turn on the first time we need it. It takes money to have it checked out and we know it’s pretty much not worth “fixing” even if it could be managed to get more life out of it. It’s expensive to run like that, when it DOES what it is supposed to, so it’s either cook or be warm, rarely cool enough, but sometimes it does better (depending on sun or clouds, drier weather, etc.) –it’s troublesome because I do terrible physically with too much heat, over 70 degrees F. higher humidity kills any energy I have, I get really ill, and I’d give $1,000 for a minute of cool dry air around me, so it’s worth it to pay that much to do something about it that is a lasting change, and add more $ to it to make it even better. But alas, everything costs, and that is the one thing that is never considered, actually DOING something about it. It’s the last thing that needs done even though I NEED it from April 1 to October 15 at the LEAST usually.

So it’s nice that Spring is here, but it’s too soon. Summer is TOO close, A/C a problem. The birds are happy though. They get to build their nests, lay their eggs, raise their young again. That’s great. I hope I can stay cool enough. That’s all.

Mild, Cold, Mild

1/12 of the year is almost already over. Fast month!

The start of this month, the New Year, the weather was oh so very spring-like mild. Now here it is the end of the month, and it is also oh so very spring-like mild. Warm the last day or so, today it’s gentle rain, overcast, but not cold.

It was very cold in-between, lots of cold, normal for Georgia.

As it goes, whenever it is more mild, my allergies are awful. Such is the case these past days.

Well there goes my “gently raining” idea. It’s POURING now. Oh well. We need rain anytime of the year, we’ve had so many drought periods since living here, it’s not anything I’d like to revisit. So I welcome the rain, even though I feel like crap.

Happy 2011

The new year was greeted by us with some Black Cat Firecrackers, 1 cake Johnny B. Good (30-shots), and 1 other cake Thunder Mountain (33-shots).

Some neighbors shot off mortars here and there after dark set in, here and there, and more as midnight grew closer. We only had firecrackers for the entire night, with “the big show” with our cakes saved for midnight.

The weather was decent for fireworks, mild, a tad chilly, but not bad. Fairly good skies, thin clouds high above, plenty of room in the sky for fireworks. Light breezes now and then, most smoke cleared out from fireworks being shot off fast enough not to be an annoyance in viewing the show(s). Breezes disturbed some of the shots the neighbors had earlier in the night. I wasn’t aware of any distortion of our cakes, but they go so differently than the single mortars, they have an overall impact. Mortars are singular, even the double or triple break sort, IMO.

So we are now in another new year. I liked the sound of 2010. It wasn’t hard to get used to. 2011 isn’t so bad, just not as grand sounding, to me, as 2010. I’ve yet to write it out wrong, so maybe it’s an easy change. FWIW
