September 11th Media Fast<\/a><\/p>\n

Oh what a wonderful quote:<\/p>\n

“Name one person who didn’t watch those planes crash into the World Trade Center and Pentagon and I will show you someone who lives under a rock. All of us remember being glued to the TV that day and the days following it as we tried to figure out what had just happened and who was responsible. The attacks killed around 3000 people and injured many more. It was a tragic time in this country and everyone wept for the events that had just occured.<\/p>\n

As we’re coming up on the one year anniversary, I would like to propose that we fast from the media images of the attacks. The press coverage for the 6 month anniversary was unbearable and I really don’t think that I need to see the World Trade Center crash to the ground again as it is sketched indelibly on my memory from when I saw it live on TV. You can definitely go to prayer services that day, or go visit graves, or do anything else. I just ask that we fast from the media because I think this day needs to be a remembrance that hasn’t been sensationalized.”<\/i><\/p>\n

I just have to laugh at this! I guess I live under a rock.<\/p>\n

We had gotten rid of our DirecTv access a few days before September 11, 2001. That left us with NO TV of any kind, save the kind you play via Video Tape or DVD locally, right there.<\/p>\n

Also, my husband was out-of-town for a few days, traveling for his work. Blissfully unaware was I, of what was going on in the Nation. So once I found out a couple of days later, guess what? I have a UNIQUE perspective of NOT being sensationally media blitzed. This affected my life not ONE WHIT!<\/p>\n

Now, I’m not trying to be caulous here. I know that bad things happened. I know that people died traumatically. Families changed forever. But it wasn’t a personal event for me. Nope. I know of no one personally that was affected by this personally.<\/p>\n

Did I need to be over-involved, and stressed to the max over something so removed from my realm of life? No. I did have enough of THAT in NOV-DEC 2000, if you catch my meaning. TV was on day and night, political talk shows were my life. Ugh. I’ve repented of that, and won’t go there for ANYTHING again. Really, life goes on for most people. I long for the days of news taking three weeks to reach me. Never in my lifetime, but my ancestors lived like that, we can too.<\/p>\n

We don’t HAVE to know the cutting edge news. Be up on what is happening RIGHT now, or see all the pictures and video of it all, over and over and over.<\/p>\n

So, I live under a rock. I wouldn’t call a sheltered life a “rock”. I have plenty of books to read, internet to browse, and I pick my content. I don’t watch local news (nothing much is local where we live. The big city news is miles from here, and not our life.) National news is even worse. The nation is not here in my area. Just my area is here. I can sympathise for the 9\/11 happenings, just as I can any other flood or bombing or tornado, whether it’s 10 miles away, 30 miles away, 1000 miles away, or more. I don’t have to watch 24\/7 coverage of anything. I don’t think it’s good for anyone to have to do that, unless it’s in their real life — they are living in the midst of it.<\/p>\n

The after-affects of this 9\/11 thing are what I call Pseudo-Patriotism. It’s sickening. I was a patriotic person since I was a little girl. I wore “red, white, and blue” when it wasn’t cool. Now we can’t go anywhere without seeing those colors, flags, stripes and stars, everywhere! It’s gaudy now. It’s like having Christmas decorations up for too long … Christmas decorations in the stores from August through December. Oh. Yeah. That does happen, doesn’t it.<\/p>\n

Just more of the same. Media blitz. Let them talk about it. I don’t watch it. I fast every day. A self-imposed fast began BEFORE 9\/11\/2001. It gives me a nice fresh view of it all. I’ve not seen the video footage, only a few still photos, and pretty much just dusty looking pictures. Nothing gory or wicked looking in particular. I can only imagine what it was like for everyone else.<\/p>\n
