Of course there are degrees in each camp, differences of what is believed. Still the two sides are fine for this discussion.

In our church, as reformed as it is (and it is very solidly reformed) there exist problems with the issue of Modesty. “Problems” is a plural word, and this is the right way to use it, referring to Modesty. There are many things about the issue that keep people from understanding it, or practicing it in a Biblical manner.

One thing is Christian Liberty — being against Legalism. Well, Legalism is a heart issue. Some one who adheres to the Law in the legalist fashion is generally doing so to attain, or to help attain, salvation. This cannot work. Salvation is through Christ alone. Our works avail us nothing but wrath on their own.

So, some Christians say “I have the liberty to dress however I want to,” and they do just that. Often looking like hookers, and men too. Little boys and girls can dress indecently also, it’s not just the adults or just the adult women, you know.

The “liberty” card is pulled out frequently to justify actions. What does Paul say about it? In Romans 6 he begins by saying “Shall we continue to sin that grace may abound?” What does he say next? Nothing short of “Certainly not!” or in the KJV “God forbid!”. Indeed!

If it feels risque … that should tell you something. If you feel even just the inkling of a rebellious joyousness … sit down and think about it, pray about it, and honestly look at it. Odds are, it’s sinful, but you were “wanting” to do it, and “saying” that you could do it, when in fact deep down you know that God has standards, and this was above His standards. Or should we really say ” …below His standards!”

Ah, standards. The stumbling block for those who see the points of dressing modestly, but say “We can’t set standards!” Thoughts of dressing in ugly, big clothing abound.

Modesty Getting back to my previous thinking … when I published instead of posting–therefore losing my words … Christians fall into two camps, generally speaking, those who want to follow Christ in everything, and those who think that salvation is enough and they can do whatever they want.
