Today will be hot. I was up at 5:45am when a fitfully sleepful night just got worse with the hens yacking up a storm. Too early for them! The sun wasn’t coming up yet, so why were they strutting around their pen? The moon was out, but it’s not full, it’s waning, and in quarter or so phase, from what my bleary eyes saw at 5:45am today.
Well the other part of it all was that it’s MOCKINGBIRD H*LL lately. This week the birdies began their nightly serenade again, as one did the other week. It was two of them last night, not in our yard, but close enough to really annoy me. It kept me snoozing and waking up. I really need coolness and blackness and quietness to sleep well. Minus quietness a really loud white noise is sufficient. So the recipe in our house is a recipe for disaster.
No A/C this year. If it’s hot outside all day, it’s murderously hot in the bedroom at night. It cools off a bit by 6am, but that’s not very helpful. The temps just start climing around 9am again, making it all a circulous mess.
We had rain this week and temps were held down to below 90 entirely, and really stayed in the low 80’s for highs … sun blotted out by thick clouds usually, so the house didn’t heat up, not until yesterday, this week. Sigh. So it’s back to hot, no breeze coming in the house, too humid, not too bad, just bad enough to mind it.
So at night, the windows are open, the shades have to be up for ANY air to come in. If neighbors have spotlights on in their yard, well it’s bright. Why can’t people understand that spotlights are useless if they aren’t on timers. You need low lighting for prettiness of surroundings, and spotlights come on to surprise burglers, etc. Full spotlights don’t deter burglers, supposedly. Makes sense to me. I am all for minimizing the light from the night sky too, so it all comes together as a good thing to do. Not around here though, according to how alot of people do thngs.[ Way too many lights at night!]
OK, so then the moon being out, even down to a quarter, it throws off lots of light, right outside our master bedroom.
So the light that I can’t control is quite high (I really need a sleeping mask, but don’t know if I could stand it if I had one, so I don’t have one!)
So far that’s HOT, LIGHT, and now it’s the noise: Mockingbirds love to sing at night. Most people I’ve talked to don’t know that, and think it’s so nice and wish they could hear it. I don’t recommend that attitude! I had a Mockingbird take up nightly residence in an orange tree RIGHT behind my bedroom, just a few feet from my bedroom window, when I was still living with my parents in Florida, many years ago. It was a whole summer of little sleep, being as Florida is very hot, and there was no A/C in that house, and the mockingbird just made it all so much worse.
Similar things happening now — only now I’m grown up, have children and a house to take care of, and need my sleep desperately!
So you like Mockingbirds singing. They love to do it at night, all night, all night, non-stop. Sound carries at night, further. There’s nothing imeding it, no other sounds in the region. Just that Mockingbird. And my ears won’t let go of that sound. So sleepily in and out of deep sleep, with many wakeful times, getting up earlier and earlier all week, I’m “running on empty”. Those with a harder to penetrate sleep may do fine in such conditions, but that’s not me.
Styx is playing, and that’s keeping me going today. 🙂 Just need to make a fresh pot of coffee. The first one is nearly done for.
