I changed HOSTS recently. On my old HOST I had WP installed. I’ve installed WP numerous times there and on other sites of mine. So when I changed to Dreamhost recently I wanted to see how their “one-click” install of WP worked.
It was simple and easy! Fill out a few things, just “naming” things, no configurations to have to know. Then “click!”. For me there was one error, I had to “rename” my chosen name for the database. No big thing, just choose a new name. I’d used something “too simple” and it was in use already by somebody else. So once I chose a new name, that “one-click” worked, and told me that the database was created and that WP would be installed within 10 minutes, I’d get an email telling me it was installed as soon as that happened. That was 7:30pm EDT. At 7:31pm EDT I had that email. I went to my site here and there it was. I just had to fill in a couple of fields in order to “install”. By the way, that “email” was very informative and had all the links for every situation anyone would probably have coming from other blog systems and for new installers.
I had to put my custom WP things in next. I put in my custom theme, plugins, photos, and such.
Then I had to get my SQL from my other site and get that into the new database. I had to fool around with it. I had to delete the tables in my database first. Then running the SQL it messed up mid-point, so I had to then get half of that data out of the file, and then re-do the stuff that didn’t run. That worked. No problem with that.
So then I just had to relog in, as my old login was now in the system. Everything almost was fine. I had to look for any “include” fields in my templates and change them. But other than one plugin that I didn’t install again, but had the data in my footer, it all looked great.
My old host didn’t have .htaccess for me. They tried to get it working, but it wasn’t a good host, just a person, not a company. DreamHost and WP worked great together. I went into my admin and put in the virtual site path codes that I wanted, and saved it. Bling! It worked when I loaded up a post. That was a dream for me, I’ve wanted .htaccess for so long now. So I have “real paths” in my links now. Yay!
This host change worked nicely. I could have done it differently, the SQL, I know, I just did it the way I did so I didn’t have to “think” or “look it up” just “did it”, as my INTP self does many things, “wing it”. If it doesn’t work, try again, change something. 🙂
Any “newbie” could get a “Dream Host” site and install WP so easily and not have to know a thing about websites hardly. The WP 5-minute install is famous. Dream Hosts one-click WP install must be famous on it’s own level, they have other software in the “one-click” line too. They are right up there with WP for working easily and working right.
