I had decided to make my pc just a server so thought Linux Mint would be a good move. Honestly I like Linux but it never served me like Windows, and putting up with stuff on windows is better than going without stuff on Linux.
As much as that is true, the other point is, my media harddrives are windows devices. They grew up in Windows.
I had permission challenges that I did meet and thought it went well, but three times I had to restore my server.
Emby Theater for Linux Mint is a nightmare to use. No, not good. I prefer the version I had, maybe it’s on another software site since my downloads were housed on my Emby partition for a long time.
This morning was the last straw, not only did everything muck up again, I was also in a loop of having only one playlist working, I worked on it and it too hours before which ever version I did worked.
I ended up with two versions of playlist on my Emby home screen, it was such a mess. I wanted to just wipe it all out and install Linux again. Basically I took a good guess and deleted one of those playlist entries. Oh no, both gone. ooooh.
They were two entities of all my playlists that were dead. The oh no was just oh. no. oh well.
So when I found after a restart of Emby it was DOA yes, once again my server was gone and what remained was that first crappy server it makes for you based on your pc name on first start up.
I was seething. So I had woes from that trying to get Windows installed again. It didn’t like any space for it, I had no where to put it. Tried again and again. So then I diskparted the 1tb nvme I wanted windows on, cleaned it, started up the install again, then I could finally install. Then of course other install problems hit, I was already doing regedit crap to get past you can’t put windows on this machine. I also wanted to just make an emby local account for this pc.
Install kept failing, whatever, then restart had the no OS message on screen, windows didn’t want the usb stick in, they said are you upgrading, we think you are so say that or that you want to clean install again.
Neither option worked until it failed a few more times, then didn’t for no damn reason.
So when trying to get the darn thing installed my 4tb nvme was sitting there untouched. It has my portable emby server from windows on it, it was going to be just a minute to get back to it once in Windows.
But of course not. It was EMPTY, Unpartitioned. It was wiped. By what. I cleaned on one disk and that was the little one, and it didn’t work then it did after a clean and restart. My 4tb wasn’t installable on and no other drives were, just the one I cleaned and it is the 1tb.
So I sequestered windows in less than 400gb and partitioned the rest for Emby.
Once again I had to download and install Emby but at least this was the one I could move anywhere I please within my system drives. I hated how Linux did it.
So my dumb first server name got wiped out fast. I got the plugins I want installed and oh, my drive letters were needing to be done still, darn.
So to disk management I went and played the swap here and there game like in Stargate SG1 where an entity had taken over Daniel via a machine he had, and then other tried it and swapped, so they had a mess to swap and swap and swap and finally last swap had every in their own bodies. Yes, that game with drive letters. Yuck.
So anyhow I lost everything on my 4tb drive, three tv shows I had just moved there 3 days ago for safe keeping to get a drive wiped that needed it. Gone. My whole totally great and solid Emby server and all my downloads and lots of stuff.
There are maybe some shows or movies missing that I’ll have to track down and run again. But so quick was my server just back in action like I’d practically never left windows. It works here Fast as a whip. All my music and all my playlists and all the photos to everything just flipping exactly how I’d left them with the backup before going to Linux.
Is this purely the NTFS in Windows vs how it is in Linux. Linux having their own preferences just can’t work with my drives.
Every flavor of Linux I’ve never kept it up for long. I do not mind it sometimes to accomplish something, like disk rescue, or running some project.
Linux was struggling to do anything.
I will never do Linux if I ever feel like I want to as long as windows at least works overall. Dual screen works differently, but not without many flaws. Not much better and not better overall. But keeping different pictures on each screen stuck because even the only screen on being not primary didn’t inherit primary when primary is turned off. Yes, task bar available, but still not designated Primary, like Windows does it. That’s best I can say about that. Other things were flaky.
Linux Mint does dark mode right as well.
Windows is a behemoth of a beast, many pieces that make little sense and lots that do make sense. Irritation but overall so many game work here not there, programs only here not there. Little niceties from github that are windows only.
Yes I am sick of windows, but there is nothing else competitive enough for me.
I used one of the dos based windows then 3.1 on my first owned computer in my house. Went through all the iterations fondly recall the XP days. That was great.
Win 7 solid and I do see why people stay on it.
Thing is Vista was bad. Then 7 why change. 8 was a mistake. 10 was as close to 7 as we’ll ever be and it’s being left behind too.
So in this post-apocalyptic computer scene I am happy to be once now in Windows. My server will be local account only. I’m going to be building another machine for me to work and play on.
