The Glory Days: Galaga

Galaga: Destination Earth is an old game I used to love so much. I have it on a PSOne disc and as a PC disc.

Long before those I first played it on NES [I swear I did] not the exact same thing, something so very similar though (my husband and I had an NES  and later an SNES back in 1992-1995.)

Back in those glory days we’d sit on the floor in front of our tube tv and have Nintendo Thumb so bad. That little rectangular piece of plastic digging into your hands, who cares!

I also played Tetris and Roger Clemens Baseball a lot.

The thing is, the Galaga game, as a ship going through the planets to the Earth, it’s what we played, it is absolutely what we played then. I don’t have any pictures of what it was, I can’t find info on it at all.

Back then all I had for a camera was a Canon p&s, and film and processing were part of it, of course, so I did not take just anything as a record or for memories unless it was something important. I just didn’t know back then how important this was! [kicking myself.]

Where are all those things we used to have? If they are in a box I hope they are in our possession somewhere … there are other things I’m looking for, old junk, not just those games, but a Zip drive, I have a cable, some of the Zip Disks … a card to connect in a parallel fast manner with a pc … but the Zip drive is hiding. Maybe it’s in the box with my NES games, my SNES games that are missing (have some of them) … oh Galaga, my Galaga.

FWIW I got the PSOne disc and used a few computer programs and successfully ripped it and ran it through to be an eboot file for my PSP, works great, except for, no music. I have to work on it more. Anyhow, I just don’t get some things about Galaga, like what was it that we played on NES before? What was it we played on NES before? And what was it that we played on NES before? Yes, repeating the question. Over and over and over. It’s like that, so “in there” digging at my brain.

The next idea that bugs me is, of ALL the PSONE games PSN could put on the store, why not Galaga: Destination Earth? It works alright as a PS3 remote play on PSP, works on PS3 just fine (to me) so please SONY PLAYSTATION, get it on PSN!

I’d pay for a better copy to download. Otherwise, I’ll have to spend more time researching and fixing it up … ugh. Not that it’s that bad, but it would be SO MUCH SIMPLER for PlayStation to do it.

Maybe it’s not up to snuff, so then how about getting it rebooted to some awesome game. Retro, sure, but updated.

The soundtrack though, I love that, and it’s the one thing I can listen to on the computer or the PS3, as both recognize 7 tracks as being CD songs. The songs are ripped on both. I’m still going to try to figure out how to get the music in the psp eboot version I made. I didn’t put much into it, so I owe it to myself to do more.

PSP Golden Compass UMD – frustration

I know, it’s a dumb game. I had it back when I first got a PSP (2007) I didn’t play it much at all, but would have, and then lost the case I had several UMD’s in, and it was one of them.

Recently my DH was out-of-town and went to a used book store, but it wasn’t only books, it also had movies and games … so he looked around and read some of the games names to me over the phone. I asked him to get me the Golden Compass again, since it was $6 and I don’t like a lot of games out there, and at least it’s from a storyline that I can tolerate (read the books, didn’t see the movie.)

I put the UMD of the game into my PSP a little while ago for the first time since DH brought it home. I played for a long while, it seemed, and then I was tired of it. I progressed further than I remembered I had before, and still, no save point. Just checkpoint after checkpoint, after checkpoint, after checkpoint …

I looked at the Pause menu, nothing about “save” … so I quit, just so desperate to stop, not wanting to continue, but wanting to next time just start where I left off.

I didn’t plan on it, but after a minute decided to start the game just to see if I could find a saved point or if it continued or whatever. It didn’t continue, no saved points. I didn’t want to play again, but then decided to keep playing since I’d just played it I knew what to expect and figured I’d get through that fast enough, and hopefully it would be not too far after that at which a destination to save (or was auto-saved) would occur.

Ha ha ha.

I was way further, still nothing saved, and then phlaaattt! My PSP shut down (out of power) oops! I got my power cord, and that’s that. I’m charging, but the game was off. Totally different from other games I’ve played. I just didn’t have the heart to see what happened if I started the UMD of Golden Compass again.

So that’s that. Maybe I’ll feel like trying again some other time, but at this point. No. Not any time soon.

Tron PS3 & PSP Themes

I bought a premium theme for my PS3 profile in the last week or so. It’s a Tron dynamic theme, very lovely blue, as in the digital realm with the grid ahead, rain coming down, Recognizers sweeping by from behind and going towards the Grid. Nice blue icons. Pleasing to the nth degree.

So what do I want on my PSP? Same thing, or something similar. Static would be ok, but yesterday I had the old PSP 2001 connected to the PS3 for someone to Remote Play an old PSx game, having to use my profile since mine is the online store account … anyhow, my Tron theme looked wonderful on the PSP screen. It makes me really upset every time before that when I looked at themes and couldn’t find anything suitable for me, and settled for LoTR premium theme. It’s OK, but I love Tron in such a higher level than LoTR, I love blue the most of all colors, so it’s so very appropriate for me to have a Tron theme on my PSP. Only thing is there isn’t one in the PSN store, and neither is there anything decent that I can find online anywhere else.

Please give me lovely official Tron for my PSP!

PSP HEN

Lately I’ve started looking into PSP homebrew. I hadn’t ever researched it, never wanting to hack my PSP, happy with it’s functionality. I was aware that custom firmwares existed, and that it was something I’d maybe want to do, but I did wait too long to fully take that to the level that would be pleasing. (My son also has a PSP 3001, and we have an older 2001 which was mine originally.)

The funny thing about it though is my PSP 3001 has updated to the newest firmware every time one is available just because having to install it in order to go to the PSN store. So when I got bit by the techno bug after the new year and started looking into it, it was amazing what I was finding. Thing moving so fast to get homebrew capabilities on my PSP 3001 (6.35 OFW) so much so now I just need 635Pro HEN, signed, in my games folder. Start that, and my PSP is 6.35 Pro, and can load homebrew, which now has me able to use PSP Filer, and I can rip my UMD’s and then play the games using Prometheus ISO Loader to start them.

Not every game is playable like that, once ripped. LoTR Tactics doesn’t work. Star Wars Battlefront II isn’t working for us either. R-Type Command does work using the N______ driver (not M33.)

I’ve also successfully ripped and played Loco Roco, Jeanne D’Arc, and Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands.

These are all UMD discs I own. I’m doing this as backup, and future proofing our game collection.

Sony has released 6.37 OFW recently. So IF we get anything on PSN we have to connect our PSP’s to the PS3 and transfer new content that way (really not that big a deal.) Why? Because using homebrew capability is more important than viewing PSN store on the PSP.

All 3 PSP’s in our house are on 6.35 OFW & can use 635Pro HEN. There are also many good homebrew games that are signed, which means you can download them to your PSP and just play them in OFW without loading HEN or anything. That is cool. All new in 2011.

Treo; Mobile Edition; Audible

We upgraded my cellphone the other day. I am now the proud owner of a Treo 755p. I love it. The last “Palm” I had was a Zire … a plastic white and blue device … which didn’t last too long. I got it as an Audible bundle deal, cheap for subscribing to an Audible plan. The device wasn’t entirely cheap on it’s own, over $100 … so getting it for around $30 was a deal. I had a Palm Vx and liked it, had it for years, but never “got into it” thoroughly enough to use it productively. The “Zire” was a tool to use with Audible, to listen to books, but also to get me into productivity through a color screen Palm. (I definitely do better with a color screen as motivation.) The Zire model I had only had a 6-month warranty. After just a little over 6-months of ownership, the screen suddenly had an orange blob on it that looked “cracked” but the screen wasn’t cracked. The blog grew, and ended up covering the whole screen basically, from top to bottom, rendering the device useless. It was a blind Palm. Only “Audible” was useful on it, only if I could find “just the right spot” to touch and open the application, then I could listen to whatever book I could blindly find … suffice it to say, the beauty of this eventually was totally lost when I had no control over the application at all, if it could even be found and opened in the first place. I had no visual reference to anything, so pausing was impossible and well … the whole thing was just a sour grape.

I took the thing apart then, since I had to check and see if it was something inside that could be fixed. There were descriptions of possible problem/fix solutions online here and there, but it ended up that nothing helped. I eventually disconnected the speaker wires, not on purpose, by accident, but that was ok, since it allowed me to distance myself from the device, I put it in a box and out of my attention span. Some months later I came across it a few times and finally ended up chucking it into the garbage.

So I had no Audible device, except my computer, and that isn’t why I got Audible, I got it for super-mobility. My Palm Vx was still active and working fine, it just has a grey-scale screen and just it’s own self ability for simple normal Palm apps. I eventually got a little SanDisk m230 player for Audible use. I never was able to “get into” my Palm Vx since the Zire incident, the “color screen” deal made the Palm Vx so undesireable to me, though it’s a great little device, I admire it still, as always, but find it non-productive for me in normal life.

Our cell phones were little Sanyo 8300′s and finally we came to the “upgrade point” for the highest amount in our contract recently. Hubby and I agreed that we’d get Blackberry’s … then as the time grew closer to actually being able to something, Palm came out with a new “smartphone” the Centro, and I thought that would be nice to have, since it was easier to get into, much cheaper than a Blackberry, by far.

The more we looked at it online, the more we looked for it in stores, and finally saw an actual device and said, nah. Too small. Too limited.

So we looked at the Blackberry’s again, and Hubby wanted one of them, and then I looked at the Treo’s and that became something do-able … so finally the day came and I was able to get one. I love it. It’s so cool. Unlimited data service. Which means it’s a wireless internet device, with a phone, and a Palm platform. It’s an audible.com device too. Even better, since it’s Audible on a wireless device, AudibleAir works. I love that even more. AudibleAir allows me to connect my device to my Audible Library online, and download books in the right Audible format for my device, in whatever segment length I want, on the fly. Subscriptions can be auto-matically downloaded. That works great. The thing I’m thrilled at then is the ability to bookmark and such again. A visual reference available to what I’m listening to.

Another thing about the phone is the Sprint service we have, Sprint TV has interesting content streamable, and premium features, that are given to new contracts for a couple of months free, are even better. Now these things were available on our little Sanyo phones, but did work like they do on this Treo. Also, we didn’t even thoroughly understand that both our phones had unlimited data just because of the Pictures package we had, didn’t start out with, but got later, and we didn’t use it much, just some. If only we’d looked into it and understood, but then we wouldn’t have liked the stuff much either, with the teeny little screen those flip phones have, and the different “experience” through a “phone” — compared to what it’s like on the Treo, which is closer to a “computer” experience than a “phone” experience.

Now then, this blog, as well as my either ones, have the wp-mobile plugin installed and activated. If one is trying to comment and runs into a problem, hopefully you’ll see you can view the “full website page” which would use the full CSS, the wp-mobile plugin being just a simple CSS served as the webpage.

My Treo does bring this site in as a “mobile” page. I have a Playstation Portable, and it doesn’t register as a mobile device when I go to my blogs with it (it can connect to a wireless network, isn’t a mobile wireless device on it’s own.) It is said (on the web elsewhere here and there) to have a “full browser” … it’s browser does have three settings for Display … the “normal” one displays ugly mixed up-esh-ness for my blogs, the “Just …” whatever it is setting is OK, but the “Smart-Fit” setting is the best. It re-orders the sections to make it fully readable, nicely.

Of course the wp-mobile plugin is nice for “mobile” browsers since it shows a reduced site automatically to devices registering as a mobile device to the plugin’s list. Since beginning to write this post I have gotten my “comments” sections to play nice with wp-mobile … basically I had to add stuff to that theme’s comments page, “just like” I have to do to my regular theme comment pages.

If anyone has problems with the “wp-mobile edition” of this blog, just click the text link “Exit the Mobile Edition (view the standard browser version) beneath each post.

When on a mobile device and you have exited the Mobile Edition, you can re-gain access to the Mobile Edition by finding the text link “Return to the Mobile Edition” beneath each post.

Christmas and New Year

Happy New Year y’all!

Christmas was nice, though we didn’t have a big tree, nor any decorated tree … with a baby again, and all the stuff that comes with one, with the way our main space is these past few years … there was just not the space for a Christmas tree, nor the energy to “try to fit one in anyhow”. :(

Hubby got me a PSP for Christmas, bundled Lmt. Edition Darth Vader (as sold at Costco). It’s cool, though I’ve done more “web browsing” on it than anything. I got Atari Classics, and Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, and a couple of movies. I didn’t have Memory Stick Duo for it right away, so I didn’t play games much. I got a Memory Stick a few days after Christmas, and it’s nicer now, I have bookmarks for the web browser and saved data for games, etc. now. I haven’t taken the time to play any games really though. I was able to buy another game and another movie the day we went out and got the Memory Stick Duo. Oh, that is a 4GB Memory Stick Duo Pro, btw.

It’s nice to add more electronics to the stash.

The children got me something too, a new Betta fish. It’s moreso blue all over, with a little bit of orange on the bottom fin area. He has a nice plastic house (it’s an angled betta “bowl” with a blue cover.) I haven’t named him as of yet. He’s so very plain looking, compared to Thaddeus, who has been with us for 1 full year now, and looking good.

The new betta isn’t a Crowntail, as Thaddeus is.

I noticed that the “back” of the new “bowl” is totally flat, and the widest part of the “bowl” and perfect as a place to put something colorful … so I fitted a piece of Christmas wrapping paper to it, and that set him off nicely. He has blue stones, and he’s blue, the top is blue, and the paper is a dark but bright cranberry-ish red with “Merry Christmas” written in gold horizontally all over the paper. I can change that out when ever I desire. I’ll make up a template to make that easier (I didn’t think to do it originally until I already had the water and the betta fish in the “bowl” )

Our new year is alright, nothing spectacular thus far. I wrote more about it on my other blog.
